Overview:

Provide immigration advising and support services to international students in non-immigrant visa classification who are enrolled in “Global Pathways”, “American Classroom”, USPP at CPS as well as non-degree seeking programs, including J-1 EV, at University. Serve as a primary resource/contact for these special programs at CPS and support ISSI admissions processes related to other Colleges within the university and regional campuses. Review and evaluate visa eligibility document requests and related inquiries for a large number of international applicants annually in order to determine, procure, and maintain the appropriate nonimmigrant visa status of matriculating international students, while also insuring compliance with federal regulations that govern the status of international students. Support international education efforts through the coordination of joint ISSI/Admissions units’ initiatives and collaboration regarding strategic outreach by staff and faculty in the arena of international admissions. Operate an integrated electronic database system as it relates to newly admitted international students and maintain conformity with SEVIS requirements, specifically information to be uploaded to U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Respond to admissions-related inquiries from abroad as appropriate, as well as from University Admissions units or other staff from various departments. Serve as a liaison between international students and College of Professional Studies & non-degree seeking special programs on a variety of academic, cultural, financial, and employment-related issues. Provide a welcoming atmosphere for prospective students and other visitors to the office. Engage in daily advising on a breath of matters ranging from providing guidance to relevant departments to the proper interpretation and adherence to a range of federal policies and procedure pertinent to specific nonimmigrant visa classifications. Serve in the official federally-authorized ISSI capacities of Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO). Assist with the planning and implementation of special projects as needed by manager. Supervise and train support staff student employees, volunteers, and practicum students. Participate in cultural programs as appropriate.

Qualifications:

This position requires an exceptional level of organizational skills, attention to details, analytical capabilities, and positive problem solving outlook needed in handling the high volume and complex cases inherent with a large international admissions process. Professional manners and style are essential in serving students and interfacing with various departments and offices both within and outside Northeastern. Substantial and continually refreshed knowledge of immigration regulations and SEVIS approved procedural steps are critical in order to help maintain our institution and international students compliant with all relevant federal regulations. High level of interpersonal and communication skills are necessary to properly fulfill supervisory responsibilities and work within established workflow processes. Proficiency in intercultural relations issues and strategies are very important to successfully and effectively perform advising and guidance roles to students and, in some cases, to other departments with specialized and non-degree programs.

Bachelor’s degree required. A minimum of two years of formal experience in international education is required. Substantial knowledge and at least one year of practical experience in US Federal regulations governing non-immigrant visa categories, such as F-1, J-1, and SEVIS operations are also strongly preferred. Commensurate expertise in international admissions and international student advising is also highly preferable. Extensive cross-cultural experience is essential. Fluency in two or more languages, experience living abroad is highly desirable. A proven ability to work effectively with students, scholars, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members who represent a broad range of cultural backgrounds and perspectives is essential. This position requires strong analytical and organizational skills to be utilized in an office setting that is quite hectic and fast-paced, thus also necessitating the ability to work well under pressure with confidential material while also effectively handling multiple tasks. Excellent intercultural communication skills are needed, along with the ability to serve as an advocate and to provide accurate information that could have legal implications. The ability to create and maintain new infrastructures/paradigms is also essential. Supervisory experience and strong computer skills in major applications are advantageous.
