DIRECTOR OF EXTERNAL AFFAIRS
(FULL-TIME, TOKYO-BASED)
The Director of External Affairs is responsible for developing, implementing and managing the day-to-day implementation of the Council’s external relations, communications, and development plans. Fluency in Japanese and English is required. We seek a candidate who is committed to the goals of the organization and can bring experience in external relationships including communications, stakeholder relations, and fundraising, primarily with corporate and major donors that have vested interest in U.S.-Japan relations. We seek a candidate who will work closely with board leadership and supporters in the implementation of organizational plans.

EXTERNAL RELATIONS RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Represents USJC to a broad-range of constituents, including philanthropic decision makers, business and government executives, and civil society leaders.
  • Works with staff and board to advance public and community relations and organizational performance
  • Creates and oversees processes to ensure the efficiency and effectiveness of external relationships

DEVELOPMENT RESPONSIBILITIES

  • In concert with the executive director and other appropriate staff develop and implements fund raising strategies including increasing corporate support and cultivating individual donor giving.
  • Collaborates with the board, collectively and individually, and works in partnership with the board development committee to increase the board’s fundraising capacity and effectiveness.
  • Writes grants and coordinates proposal submissions and funder reports, communication, and compliance.

PROGRAM AND COMMUNICATIONS RESPONSIBILITIES

  • In coordination with the executive director and other appropriate staff create, manage and implement communication plans to raise the visibility of USJC in Japan, its programs and its activities
  • Works in collaboration with USJC TOMODACHI Staff and Program Staff to ensure effective implementation and communication of USJC programs in Japan.
  • Works in collaboration with Board and Council members to ensure the USJC is represented to a broad range of constituents, including philanthropic decision makers, business and government executives and supporters and civil society leaders.
  • Ensures that USJC messages are consistently and effectively conveyed.

Requirements:

  • Strong strategic, organizational and management abilities
  • Excellent interpersonal skills working with a broad base of stakeholders
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills in Japanese and English
  • Proven success developing, implementing and managing a fundraising strategy that includes corporate and individual giving
  • Experience in implementing and managing a communication plan that includes traditional and electronic media.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and managing events
  • Ability to formulate and execute plans efficiently and effectively
  • Experience in achieving organizational goals and objectives
  • Experience working in a team environment
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines effectively
