Overview

Allegheny College, a highly selective 4-year liberal arts institution located in northwestern Pennsylvania, invites applications for an International Student/Scholar Advisor in the International Education Office now part of the Allegheny Gateway. The Allegheny Gateway offers opportunities for students to study, live and work abroad; encounter diverse peoples and viewpoints; and become involved in defining and addressing real-world problems and challenges as it prepares them for careers and graduate and professional studies.

The successful candidate for this position will advise and support the international student and scholar community at Allegheny College and must be familiar with immigration regulations pertaining to F-1, J-1 and H1-B visas in a college context. In collaboration with the other offices within the Gateway, the international student/scholar advisor will be responsible for further developing and implementing the outreach, orientation and retention initiatives for our international student/scholar community and will work to enhance cross-cultural programming efforts at the College. Supervision for this position will be provided by the Director of International Education. This is a 12 month position with occasional night and weekend hours.

Requirements:

A Bachelor’s degree and previous experience advising international student/scholars are required. A Master’s degree is preferred. The candidate should be able to demonstrate knowledge of and sensitivity to cross-cultural issues and possess superior oral/written communication skills. Preference will be given to those candidates who have previously served as advisors to international students and scholars on F-1, J-1 and H1-B visas. Knowledge of a second language preferably Chinese is desired. The candidate must have a valid driver’s license, a good driving record and be willing to drive passenger vans.
