Overview:

The main responsibility of this position is to provide crucial advising and other vital services to international students and their dependents at UC San Diego, so they can maintain their legal non-immigrant status, and advise on other related issues. Other key responsibilities are to liaise with campus units on bringing international students and their dependents to campus on F or J status, to serve as a resource for the campus regarding procedures, policies, and regulations related to all types of non-immigrant statuses, to produce immigration-related documents relating to F and J status, to assist with federally-mandated compliance requirements related to the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) within specified time lines as required by Department of Homeland Security regulations, process I-20s, and to maintain effective working relationships with government agencies, campus departments, and community organizations.

In coordinating outreach and programs, the advisor will identify campus and community opportunities for increased interactions between international students and their US counterparts in order to foster the development of international knowledge, skills, and sensitivities, plan and develop innovative programs, workshops, and activities to improve retention of international students, and promote the involvement of international students as resources in campus and community programs for the mutual benefit of all.

The advisor will ensure that international students and their dependents have successful educational and personal experiences at UC San Diego through appropriate advocacy, advising, and programmatic support.

~~Must work occasional evenings and weekends; available to attend professional conferences.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of one year of professional advising experience with international populations in a university advising operation.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of federal regulations affecting international populations, especially those in F and J statuses. Familiarity with the following I-94 statuses: B-1 Business Visitor, WB Business Waiver, B-2 Tourist Visitor, WT Tourist Waiver, E-2, L-2, H-1B, H-4, and US Permanent Resident.
  • Demonstrated experience with the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) and fsaATLAS
  • Demonstrated skill in planning, designing, publicizing, implementing, and evaluating student orientation programs, workshops, and cross-cultural activities and events.
  • Demonstrated skill and experience using Microsoft Office programs including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, as well as other software programs, such as FileMaker Pro, In-Design, Adobe Acrobat, etc.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills for correspondence (especially by e-mail), detailed information materials, handbooks, websites, etc.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with UC San Diego policies and procedures
  • Minimum 1-2 years of experience as a Designated School Official (DSO) and/or Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO)
