Location: Abu Dhabi, UAE
Type: full-time (12 mo.)
Proposed start date:
June 1, 2014

Overview:

NYU and NYUAD currently operate two major community outreach programs. The Sheikh Mohamed Scholars Program (“SMSP”), established in 2008, is a coeducational program that offers a select cohort of talented university students unique access to specially designed courses, lectures, leadership experiences over the course of the academic year, and networking, graduate school opportunities and scholarships following graduation from the program. It conducts a competitive annual selection process and accepts Scholars from among the most outstanding students at the three national UAE universities: Zayed University, the United Arab Emirates University, and Higher Colleges of Technology. The Scholars Program has been developed in close consultation with the Abu Dhabi Education Council, participating universities, and New York University Abu Dhabi. The SMSP offers courses and enrichment programs that scholars take in addition to their own courses of study at their home institutions. The four SMSP courses are: one principal academic class (Supreme Court and the Religious Clause OR American Foreign Policy), Critical Thinking and Persuasive Writing, and Leadership Development and Public Speaking.

The NYUAD Summer Academy, launched in 2011, is a coeducational college preparatory program designed to enhance the academic profile of highly motivated Emirati high school students from public and private high schools in Abu Dhabi who are about to start their 11th year. The program features intensive instruction in Critical Writing and Thinking, Mathematical Reasoning, Test Preparation, and Leadership Development and Public Speaking over the course of two summers, an intervening academic year, and a final semester in the fall of their 12th year. Each summer, students receive approximately three weeks of daily instruction at the NYUAD campus before traveling to Florence, Italy (1st summer) and New York City (2nd summer) for approximately ten days of classes and cross-cultural experiences.
