Position: Alumni Coordinator

Overview:

The TOMODACHI Initiative is seeking a talented, dynamic, bilingual individual for the position of TOMODACHI Alumni Coordinator. The Coordinator will be responsible for the development and oversight of TOMODACHI alumni programming throughout Japan and, in coordination with U.S.-based staff, on programs in the United States, with the goal of building upon short-term exchange experiences to promote continued alumni engagement with the United States (or Japan, in the case of American alumni). The Coordinator will report to the Executive Director of the TOMODACHI Initiative in Tokyo, and be co-located with the TOMODACHI team in offices both in the U.S. Embassy and pro bono space provided by GE in Akasaka, Tokyo.

Responsibilities:

Coordination of Alumni Activities

  • Design, lead, and conduct follow-on activities with alumni to foster a sense of identity as the “TOMODACHI Generation” and encourage participants to stay actively engaged, with TOMODACHI and with each other, upon program completion
  • Develop networks among participants from diverse programs that are based upon common interests through small scale seminars and activities
  • Energize alumni social media activities and link to broader TOMODACHI platforms
  • Leverage alumni to enhance existing TOMODACHI activities, as well to create new opportunities to help develop the TOMODACHI Generation
  • Develop networks among key stakeholders supporting Tohoku youth, including civil society, educational organizations, community leaders, and partner organizations.
  • Poll alumni to obtain information on their interests, types of activities they find meaningful, and other information that will help TOMODACHI in further developing and refining its alumni outreach strategy and programming
  • Work closely with different stakeholders, including the U.S. Embassy Tokyo Public Affairs Office, U.S.-based USJC staff, and TOMODACHI sponsors, to develop and implement TOMODACHI alumni activities in Japan and the United States
  • Work closely with Public Affairs officers at U.S. Embassy Tokyo and U.S. Consulates to find opportunities for creating joint alumni events and activities with Japanese alumni of U.S. State Department exchange programs

Program Development

  • Survey and catalogue capacity for leadership training and development programs in Japan and the United States that could support “next generation” leaders aged 14-35 and offer an appropriate U.S.-Japan connection
  • Partner with quality non-profit organizations already active in creating youth leadership programs to further build their implementation capacity
  • Develop a resource center within TOMODACHI for youth leadership programs with a U.S.-Japan connection
  • Foster support for TOMODACHI’s mission by demonstrating program impact through alumni success, facilitating interaction between donors and exceptional alumni to demonstrate value, and developing plans for greater donor support for follow-up activities
  • Develop & implement a strategy that sustains alumni activities for key TOMODACHI programs

Information Distribution

  • Verify, update, and consolidate all alumni information in the alumni database
  • Develop alumni-centered Japanese language publications
  • Use web-based, social media applications for alumni outreach
  • Write reports on alumni events and activities to be distributed across TOMODACHI, U.S. Embassy, and alumni program sponsors
  • Regularly update TOMODACHI website information regarding alumni activities

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in social science or humanities required
  • Fluency (speaking and writing) in English and Japanese required
  • Three to five years of experience in the field of cultural exchange, alumni outreach, and/or public relations preferred
  • Proficiency in all standard Microsoft applications, familiarity in the design of Facebook pages and groups and the use of other interactive social networking sites, such as YouTube and Facebook, required.
  • Familiarity with U.S. and Japanese social, cultural, and educational environment preferred
  • Experience working with youth aged 14-35 preferred
  • Willingness to travel regularly within Japan required
  • Applicant must pass a standard U.S. government background investigation in order to use the U.S. Embassy Tokyo office space
