Director of the Slater International Center at Wellesley College Advisor to International Students and Scholars

Wellesley College’s mission is to provide an excellent liberal arts education for women who will make a difference in the world. Wellesley offers a comprehensive, residential, undergraduate education to over 2300 women from diverse racial, ethnic, geographic, and economic backgrounds.  Approximately ten percent of Wellesley students are international representing more than 75 countries.  The Slater Center, which includes the office of the director, affords the international community common space for gatherings and programs.  Through the
activities of the center, members of the Wellesley community learn about international issues and cultural traditions.

Full-time, 12 month appointment in the Division of Student Life

Responsibilities:
Coordinates the programming of the center to enhance the experience of international students (including orientation). Oversees the
administration of the building, staffing (an administrative assistant and student workers) and budget of the center. Determines policy and
oversees programs, services and support for our international students and scholars.  Serves as the Principal Designated School Official
(PDSO) and the Responsible Officer (RO) and responsible for institutional immigration compliance.  Responsible for SEVIS
management and processing H1 visa and permanent residency applications for faculty and staff.

Qualifications:Must have US citizenship or permanent residence as required by federal regulations for serving as a PDSO and RO.
Master’s degree in Student Affairs, International Studies, or related field with 5 – 7 years substantial direct experience strongly
preferred including involvement with NAFSA.  Experience working with international students and scholars, immigration and data management. Significant knowledge of regulations governing F-1, J-1 and H-1 visas.  Experience with SEVIS system.  Proven success in working with a diverse community.  Ability to work independently and as an effective team member.  Competency in a foreign language or overseas experience preferred.

TITLE: International Programs Assistant (this is a one year, 20 hour per week contract without benefits)

DUTIES: The International Programs Assistant will be responsible for helping to coordinate the education abroad programs administered by
the International Programs Office.

Responsibilities include:
–      Performing general office work and providing clerical support for the office; maintaining program records; assembling program materials

Duties: The Study Abroad Advisor will be responsible for managing a portfolio of the study abroad programs administered by the Center for International Programs. Responsibilities include:

• Advising prospective study abroad students about the programs under the advisor’s supervision
• Advising students accepted to these programs regarding such issues as application procedures, academics, course enrollment procedures, travel, housing, visas, documentation, costs, culture, health and safety, etc.
• Reviewing program applications
• Liaising with partner institutions, faculty directors and resident directors
• Communicating with students, parents, home and host institutions, and campus offices regarding program matters
• Coordinating pre-departure arrangements and participating in orientations

Study abroad programs and some of the functional responsibilities assigned to the advisor will depend on candidate’s professional experiences, geographic expertise and the needs of the study abroad office.

Essential functions:  Oversee daily operation of program development team, ensure that key processes occur in a timely manner for SAO and departmentally administered programs, supervise program development staff, and identify and propose improvements to current procedures and operations. Develop and administer faculty-led programs, including initial program
and budget development, contract negotiations, student recruitment, application/post-application review, orientations and pre-departure
sessions. Serve as part of the SAO management team. Share responsibility with other SAO managers for professional development of SAO staff, as well as for emergency response and monitoring worldwide health, safety and security developments. Conduct outreach activities for departments and faculty and represent the SAO on-campus in formal and information meetings. Special projects as assigned.

Required Qualifications:  Bachelor’s degree in a related field and seven years of responsible level experience developing or administering
study abroad programs, or master’s degree and five years of experience. Experience advising college students. Significant international experience living, studying or working abroad. Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills. Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications:  Supervision of staff in a professional setting. Work with faculty in higher education; demonstrated collaboration within and across work groups. Experience developing and managing budgets, negotiating contracts, and/or managing complex projects or functional areas. Knowledge of student health, safety and security issues in study abroad programs. Demonstrated creative and relevant marketing knowledge.
